A Daughter’s Worth Is Not Her Dowry

In a small village, a widow named Sushila lived with her daughter, Radha. Sushila owned only a small piece of farmland, which was enough to support the two of them. Radha was beautiful, hardworking, and kind-hearted. One day, Rohan, the son of a wealthy family in the village, noticed Radha and fell in love with her. He approached his parents and expressed his desire to marry her. At first, Rohan's parents were not willing to agree, but after Rohan insisted, they finally accepted the proposal. Sushila hesitantly said, "We are very poor. We cannot afford to give any dowry." Rohan's father smiled and replied generously, "We don't want any dowry. All we want is for Radha to become a happy member of our family." The wedding took place happily, and Radha moved into Rohan's home. For the first few months, everything seemed perfect. But slowly, Rohan's mother, Mrs. Kapoor, began changing her behavior toward Radha. She started finding faults in everythi...

The Love Whose Value She Understood Too Late

Pearl and Anthony spent their childhood in a quiet town in Ohio, USA. They first met when they were just eight years old.

Same school, same neighborhood, and slowly — each other's best friends.

Pearl shared every happiness with Anthony, and whenever she was in trouble, Anthony would reach her without even being asked.

Time passed. School ended, college began, but their friendship remained the same.

On an evening in their final year of college, they were sitting by a nearby lake. The sun was slowly setting.

Pearl smiled and asked,
"Anthony, what if we ever get separated?"

Anthony looked at her.
"Why would we ever separate?"

"I don't know... life can change anytime."

Anthony held her hand.
"Then let life change. I won't."

Pearl's eyes filled with tears. That same evening they both realized that their childhood friendship had turned into love without them even noticing.

After college, Anthony and Pearl told their families about their relationship. With their families' blessing, they got married.

Their house wasn't very big, but it was full of happiness.

They had breakfast together every morning, went to work, and talked about their whole day in the evening.

Anthony often told Pearl,
"We don't have everything, but if you are with me, I don't lack anything."

Pearl would smile and reply,
"I will always be with you."

They had many dreams for the years to come.

But one rainy night changed their life forever.

One evening Anthony and Pearl were returning home by car. The rain was heavy and visibility on the road was very low.

Suddenly a car coming from the opposite direction lost control.

Without caring for himself, Anthony turned the car to save Pearl.

In just a few seconds, everything changed.

Pearl was injured, but she was safe. Anthony was critically injured.

After hours of treatment in the hospital, doctors told Pearl that Anthony's life was saved, but it was not possible to save one of his legs.

When Anthony regained consciousness, the first thing he asked was,
"Is Pearl okay?"

Pearl was sitting next to him, crying.
"I'm okay... but why did this happen to you?"

Anthony said with a faint smile,
"Because in that moment I only remembered to save you."

After returning home from the hospital, their life was no longer the same. Anthony had to rely on a wheelchair. He tried his best not to burden Pearl with his struggles.

But slowly, restlessness began to grow inside Pearl. She started missing her old freedom — the long drives, the sudden getaways, living without any worries.

Anthony understood Pearl was troubled. One day he said,
"If you have any complaint against me, tell me."

Pearl lowered her head.
"You've changed, Anthony."

Anthony remained silent for a moment.
"I know. But my love hasn't changed."

Around the same time, she met Henry, an old college acquaintance. Henry listened to her problems, made her laugh, and reminded her of the old life she felt she had lost. Slowly, Pearl grew closer to him.

Anthony sensed the truth. He didn't fight.

One evening he asked calmly,
"Do you love Henry?"

Pearl's eyes filled with tears. She said nothing. Her silence was his answer.

Anthony took a deep breath.
"If you can be happy with him, I won't stop you."

Pearl looked at him. Anthony's eyes were moist.
"Just remember one thing, Pearl. I didn't save you that night so that you would be forced to stay with me for the rest of your life. I saved you because I loved you."

Pearl broke down. But she still made the wrong decision. A few days later she left Anthony's house and went with Henry.

At first, Pearl thought she had made the right decision. Henry kept her happy. But soon everything changed. He wasn't as attentive as before. His promises became excuses. Then Pearl found out Henry wasn't honest with her — there was someone else in his life.

"Why did you do this to me?" she asked him.

Henry said coldly,
"You yourself decided to leave your husband. I didn't force you."

That night she sat alone and cried for a long time. She understood she hadn't chosen love, but her own weakness.

For months Pearl lived in regret. She remembered every small thing about Anthony — his smile, his waiting, his help without complaint. And most of all, that night when he had saved her without caring for his own life.

Finally, Pearl returned to Anthony. The door opened and there he was. They looked at each other for a few moments. Tears rolled down Pearl's eyes.

"Anthony... I made a huge mistake. I understood the value of your love very late. Can you give me one more chance?"

Anthony looked at her. There was no anger in his eyes. Only tiredness and old pain.

"Pearl, I never learned to hate you."

That night Anthony stayed awake for a long time. He took out their old photos — as kids, in college smiling, their wedding, and finally the one by the lake.

He held the photo to his chest.
"How happy we were..."

Next morning Pearl called him,
"Anthony, breakfast is ready."

No answer came.

She called again. Still no answer. When she reached the room, she froze.

Anthony was gone forever. His death was peaceful. Their old photo was kept beside him.

Pearl broke down looking at the photo. She had come back, but too late.

Many years passed. Pearl kept Anthony's photo safe in her home. Every year on their wedding anniversary she went to the same lake where they had first confessed their love.

She often thought — "If I hadn't let go of my husband's hand at that time, perhaps our story would have ended differently."

But in life, some decisions cannot be taken back.

Pearl finally understood that true love is not always easy. Sometimes true love is what stands by you in sickness, trouble, change, and hard times.

Anthony loved her even when life had taken so much from him. Pearl understood that love only when she had no way left to get it back.

No one could ever take Anthony's place in her life again.

Because some people leave our lives...

But the love spent with them stays alive in our memories forever.

And Pearl's biggest lesson was this — Never forget in easy days the value of the person who held your hand in difficult times.
